Envy XI - Andrew Winn

Envy XI Picked By: Andrew Winn

Club(s) Supported: Manchester United FC

Goalkeeper: Pepe Reina - Liverpool FC: There were hints, subtle ones, perhaps slightly exaggerated or even fabricated, that a move to United may have interested the Spanish goalkeeper; rumours I was absolutely fine with. An absence from the Champions League and a desire to challenge for trophies can make even the most valued player consider his future. Alas, it’s null and void; nobody inside Anfield would sanction a move to United for anyone. But at least he’s said nice words about United’s new #1.

Right Back: Javier Zanetti - Internazionale: A living legend, an icon, a man who has been there and done pretty much all there is to do in football. Zanetti is a man who can bring decades of experience to the right-back position for United, providing valuable experience to any youngsters coming through the ranks.

Left Back: Fabio Coentrão - CF Real Madrid: Ah, left-back, perhaps the worst position going. Nothing ever good came from playing at left-back. The one position the popular kids would lump the fat, speccy kid in for playground games, if he rejected going in goal. I’m not saying Coentrão was a fat, speccy kid at all, but if he was, he’s come a long way since his school days. Not because he’s no longer fat and speccy, but because he’s become a pretty decent left-back.

Centre Back: Thomas Vermaelen - Arsenal FC: The man who once paid £8m for Francis Jeffers and £6m for Richard Wright proves that he can actually sign someone decent one in a while. Arguably, the only decent defender left at Arsenal, and can manage that feat alongside being a better goal scorer than the majority of their strikers.

Centre Back: Gerard Piqué - Barcelona: Wish he’d never left Manchester, if I’m honest. Rossi falls into that bracket too. We have some fantastic centre- backs currently at the club, but I’d still make room. His bird’s not too shabby either. Not sure if she’d leave Barcelona for the North West though.

Attacking Midfield: Chung-Yong Lee - Bolton: Part one of my Asian attacking flair. I was gutted to learn of his season-ending injury before the season had even kicked off, and, in my opinion, will prove to be a bigger loss to Owen Coyle’s his aging, lacklustre Wanderers side than either Elmander or Sturridge. Achingly underrated.

Defensive Midfield: Javier Zanetti - Internazionale: A living legend, an icon, a man who has been there and done pretty much all there is to do in football. Zanetti is a man who can bring decades of experience to the right-b... defensive midfield position for United, providing valuable experience to any ...er... even more youngsters coming through the ranks.

Centre Midfield: Tom Huddlestone - Tottenham Hotspur FC: Who best to pair alongside an aging defensive midfielder, who also appears to be playing at right-back, than a player who isn’t known for his acceleration and mobility? Despite being listed in the footballing dictionary under B for brick shithouse, I’d still happily sign Huddlestone, not only as he’s young, talented and English with a ferocious shot on him, but it would make ‘Arry happy - he’d have a bit more money to spend in the transfer market.

Centre Forward: Javier Saviola - Benfica: Diminutive strikers are so much better than their lanky counterparts. I’d happily invest in 5ft 6 instead of 6ft 6, and there’s no better 5ft 6 than Saviola. Only 29, despite it feeling like he’s been around for ages. Experienced, with a natural ability that hasn’t waned. Love him.

Right Forward: Keisuke Honda - CSKA Moscow: My second Asian player and one I’d love to see more often. I still have quite a vivid memory of his belter of a free-kick against Denmark, in South Africa last year. Plus every club likes a player with a good nickname, and Keizer Keisuke sounds bloody terrifying.

Left Forward: Lukas Podolski - Köln: Ach, I rate him. But then again, I’ve got a fat Englishman as a holding midfielder, so what the fuck do I know?
